NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The Audubon Zoo's newest litter of African painted puppies got a healthy seal of approval after their first doctor's visit.

"They were fantastic. Every one looked really good,'' Audubon senior veterinarian Dr. Bob MacLean said. "We didn't pick up any abnormalities and there was nothing we were concerned about."

The puppies underwent eye, ear and heart exams. They also got their vaccinations and microchips under the skin of the neck between the shoulders of each dog. It's the same procedure used for people's pets.

The hour-long exam revealed the gender of the puppies born at the zoo on September 11, 2016. Doctors say there are five females and five males.

Now that zoo staff know the gender of each puppy, they will soon be naming them.

The zoo says the birth of the African painted pups is significant for the highly endangered species. Audubon officials say only a handful of accredited members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has bred painted dogs, one of the most endangered carnivores on the African continent. The newborns are the offspring of first-time parents Sienna, 4 and Pax, 9.

Next up for the pups will be two more rounds of vaccinations over the next two months.
