Late check-out leads to pot bust and conviction

GRETNA, LA (WVUE) - A man's missed check-out time at a Gretna motel set the stage for his conviction on marijuana distribution.

A Jefferson Parish jury convicted 28-year-old Raymond Allen of possession with intent to distribute the marijuana he left behind in a Gretna motel room.

Prosecutors say Allen rented a room for one night on May 5.   The next morning he left to run errands but didn't make it back before the 11 a.m. check-out time.

A housekeeper discovered the 149 grams of marijuana in the room and alerted hotel management, who called Gretna Police.

Officers were waiting for Allen when he returned to the hotel to pick up his belongings after noon.

According to a news release from Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick, Jr., Allen told officers, "Y'all are here because of the weed in my room."

Police say he  admitted he was selling the marijuana.

During the trial, which ended November 18, Allen denied the charges and claimed he bought the marijuana for personal use.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 1.
