Man says he was beaten unconscious in Quarter because of innocent mistake

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A man said he was attacked by as many as three men because of an innocent mistake early Sunday morning in the French Quarter. Now, New Orleans police are investigating.

We're protecting his identity because of what he said happened to him.

"I was knocked out, and the doctor thinks I may have been kicked a few times," he said.

He said he was beaten unconscious because he accidentally stepped on the foot of one of the men who beat him - something he said he even apologized for.

"[What] I do remember is passing the group of young people, and then I hear them yelling and screaming, and then next thing you know I hear a couple of people running back," the victim said. "I turn around, and there were two or three young men, and the next thing you know I'm punched."

Now, he may have to have surgery to correct his fractured nose.

"I'll try to get back to work next week if not sooner," he said. "I think I can do it, but the sooner I can recover, the better."

Police said detectives are gathering video evidence from the 1000 block of Dauphine Street where the beating happened. Meanwhile, the man had advice for anyone visiting the French Quarter.

"Just be vigilant, make smart decisions," he said. "If you have to walk alone, be wary of your surroundings, try to stay in more populated areas."

He said he's expected to make a full recovery.
