NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A man who pulled an armed robbery near the Treme neighborhood was quickly caught after he fired shots at New Orleans police officers responding to the scene.
Dequest McDowell, 20, was arrested just after 11 p.m. Tuesday after police received a call reporting an armed robbery in the 1400 block of North Derbigny Street.
Task force officers from the First Fifth Districts were already in the neighborhood looking for other armed robbery suspects and immediately responded to the scene.
They spotted a man, later identified as McDowell, who fit the description of the suspect.
McDowell ran off and officers chased him in marked police vehicles.
While attempting to escape, McDowell fired several shots toward the officers.
The shots missed the officers but did strike two marked police vehicles. Police did not return fire.
The chase continued on foot and set up a perimeter in the area.
They found McDowell hiding under a boat on a trailer in the 1600 block of North Tonti Street. He was arrested without further incident.
In addition to the stolen items, officers recovered the silver and black 9mm handgun believe to have been used in the incident.
The robbery victim identified McDowell as the suspect.
Police think McDowell may be responsible for several recent armed robberies reported in the area.
Those investigations are on-going.
