GRETNA, LA (WVUE) -

Ronald Gasser, the man questioned in the shooting death of Joe McKnight was released overnight, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s office.

He has not been formally charged. The investigation is ongoing.

Investigators say the shooting happened at the intersection of Behrman Highway and Holmes Boulevard in Terrytown around 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

Police say Ronald Gasser, 54, shot and killed the McKnight in an apparent road rage incident.

An image obtained by FOX 8 shows a man sitting on the ground next to McKnight's body in the moments following the shooting. Neighbors of Gasser said the image is of the suspected shooter.

Witnesses say McKnight cutoff Gasser and the two were involved in a heated exchange. That argument escalated and shots were fired.

Many questions remain this morning about the incident. Authorities want to know what led up to it and when or if Gasser will be charged.

McKnight played football at John Curtis and the University of Southern California before moving on to the NFL and CFL.
