COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - The Covington Police Department is investigating a shooting that left one victim hospitalized and two people in police custody. Around 9:40 on Thursday, officers were dispatched to a report of gunfire at an apartment complex on S. Jefferson Ave. Officers located multiple shell casings and began an investigation into the incident.
According to a department spokesperson, 20 minutes after the initial call, officers received a report of a shooting victim at the intersection of W 16th & S Harrison Ave.
Officers found an 18-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was taken to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond where he is currently listed in stable condition.
Detectives believe the shooting was related to an attempted drug deal gone wrong. Initial findings suggest that the shooting victim and another 18-year-old male drove to the complex for a pre-arranged drug transaction with a 21-year-old female identified by investigators as Kayla Clark.
The two, still inside the vehicle, were approached by the Clark. Details are still under investigation but during the transaction something went wrong and the two men tried to flee the scene. Andre Waters Jr, believed to be the female's boyfriend, fired approximately three shots into the vehicle, striking the driver once.
Investigators placed both Clark and Waters under arrest for their involvement in the incident.
