GRETNA, LA (WVUE) - The pursuit of a stolen car led to a shootout and a hit-and-run that sent a Gretna officer to the hospital Thursday night.

According to Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand, the incident began at around 9 p.m. when his deputies on patrol in Marrero, spotted a Kia Optima that was reported stolen out of Kenner on Dec. 3. Deputies pursued the driver into Gretna, and Normand said gunfire was exchanged twice during the chase.

Gretna Police Chief Arthur Lawson said one officer was injured when the suspect, identified as 17-year-old Ray John Brown, hit the officer with his car. Brown eventually abandoned the stolen car and fled on foot. He was later found hiding in another car in the 500 block of Derbigny Street.

Deputies said Brown sustained a single gunshot wound to the stomach and was hospitalized. The officer, who was not identified, was also hospitalized. He is said to be in good condition.

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office spokesperson said Brown was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of New Orleans for aggravated assault with a weapon. He has five prior felony arrests as a juvenile.
