Crash in Waggaman claims life of Lafitte man

WAGGAMAN, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana state police are investigating a vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Lafitte man. The incident occurred Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 18 and Avondale Garden Road in Waggaman.

Police say that 37-year-old Derek Williams was driving a motorcycle east on Hwy 18, while an SUV, driven by 30-year-old Ronya Boyd of Metairie, was on the same roadway, in the same area, traveling west.

According to police, Boyd failed to stay in his lane as he was traveling through a right curve. As he crossed into the other lane, the SUV struck the motorcycle, causing Williams to be ejected. Williams was transported to West Jefferson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. At the time of the crash, Williams was wearing a DOT approved helmet.

Investigators do not believe that impairment played a factor in the crash. Blood samples from Boyd were collected and a toxicology test will be performed at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Investigators noticed that the tires on the SUV had significant wear and age, leading them to believe that a lack of tire maintenance played a role in the crash.

The investigation into the crash continues and criminal charges are pending.
