KENNER, LA (WVUE) - The ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft already operate in Orleans and Jefferson parishes.
Kenner officials are considering an ordinance that allows those services to operate in the city.
If approved, Uber and Lyft drivers would be randomly drug tested and face background checks.
Councilman Dominick Impastato crafted the proposed ordinance.
Impastato says he has received positive feedback from residents who welcome the ride-sharing companies.
The ordinance says there is a need for innovative transportation solutions in Kenner.
But most cab drivers disagree. They're concerned that ride-sharing services cut into their business.
Those cab drivers and other residents are invited to attend a city council meeting tonight to voice their concerns before the vote.
The meeting starts at 5 p.m. in Kenner City Hall.
