After Further Review: Brandin Cooks is Saints most tradeable asset

Brandin Cooks trade talks

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The New Orleans Saints had one of the best young trios of wide receivers in the NFL last year. Brandin Cooks, Michael Thomas, and Willie Snead came 105 yards from having three one-thousand yard receivers.

Still, they finished 7-9.

That's in no way to blame their record on them. But it does show that having a great group of wide receivers doesn't necessarily equal success.

Thus, the group is more of a luxury not a necessity. They're a want more than a need, especially when there are so many other needs and musts on their roster.

So the idea of Brandin Cooks reportedly being at the center of trade talks is not completely surprising. He's young, productive and despite his stats, his production can be replaced. The Saints have had several different skilled players since 2006 and have never finished lower than sixth in total offense.

Quite frankly, Cooks is the most tradeable asset on the Saints roster. If that asset can be flipped to make the organization better as a whole, then the Saints MUST look into it.

The key is in the compensation. Cooks is coming off back-to-back thousand yard seasons and, at 23, is just entering the prime of his career. He's also a big-play threat. According to ESPN, only Odell Beckham has had more touchdowns of 30 or more yards since 2014.

That's enticing for a team in need of a home run hitter in their passing game, enticing enough to include a high draft pick in any package for Cooks.

That should be the starting point. We'll see where it ends up.
