Jefferson Parish deputy shoots man during struggle

MARRERO, LA (WVUE) - A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy shot a man during a struggle after he refused to stop his vehicle.

According to initial Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department reports, a woman called reporting her daughter was being threatened by an ex-boyfriend.

Deputy Justine Campora responded around 6:45 p.m. Sunday to the 2600 block of Oklahoma Drive in Marrero.

When Campora arrived, the suspect, Deshawn Hovis led her on a chase to his mother's driveway in the 4100 block of Teton Street.

Reports say when Campora tried to remove Hovis from the vehicle he shifted into reverse, leaving Campora partially under the vehicle.

Investigators say Campora then shot Hovis in the cheek.

Hovis is recovering and will be booked with one count of attempted first-degree murder.
