NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A female gorilla at the Audubon Zoo tossed a block of wood out of its enclosure Sunday, striking a pregnant woman in the head, zoo officials have confirmed.
The block of wood, or "enrichment item," was thrown by "Praline," one of two female gorillas at the zoo.
The zoo's medical staff treated the woman and are assisting her with her medical care.
Zoo officials said enrichment items are generally food or other objects for the animals to play with.
They are designed to allow the animals opportunities to express natural, species-appropriate behaviors such as foraging, exploring, playing, or other activities, the zoo said in a statement.
The piece of wood tossed from the enclosure had small slots for food and treats such as honey and raisins.
Zoo officials are investigating how the incident happened and "will address any necessary concerns."
