ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

The driver of a pickup truck suffered serious injury in a crash on the Causeway Bridge.

Authorities say it happened just before noon in the northbound lanes at mile marker 16.

Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou says an 18-wheeler had broken down and was blocking the right lane of traffic when a pickup truck slammed into the back of the vehicle going at full speed.

The speed limit on the causeway is 65 miles per hour.

Dufrechou says the driver of the pickup truck was pinned under the 18-wheeler and had to be cut out. He was taken to North Oaks Hospital with several broken bones.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was also taken to a hospital.

The crash caused a small fire that was quickly extinguished. The bridge reopened to traffic about an hour later.
