JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - New business growth in Elmwood propels it to be one of the top sales tax revenue sites for Jefferson Parish. But retail may not be the only new thing coming to the area, housing could be too.
Dionne Jones spends her Thursday afternoon doing what she loves best: shopping. The Seventh Ward resident said she doesn't mind making the trek to Elmwood.
"Once you come to this one spot, everything is right here," she said. "That's why I come all the way out here."
She marvels at how this area has changed in recent years. Today, a new local company, District Donuts, celebrated a grand opening in Elmwood.
"It's clearly become a destination space for people who live in Metairie, Kenner and the surrounding area," owner Aaron Vogel said.
Lakeside Mall continues to be the number one sales tax driver for Jefferson Parish, but thanks to all the new growth, Elmwood now comes in at number two.
"I think nationally you're seeing more people shop at strip centers, and power strips like this versus the traditional malls, so I think this has been a new opportunity, a new growth area for the parish as people look for retail options," said JEDCO President Jerry Bologna.
There could soon be other options too of the residential variety. With K-Mart soon closing its doors, something will be done with its massive plot of land.
"I think over the next couple of years, you're going to see even further transformation of this area and really a development into a live, work, play environment," Bologna explained.
In addition to new housing, walking paths and more greenery is being discussed. For now, retailers say they're reaping the rewards of an area ripe with opportunity.
With the opening of District Donuts, the company anticipates an economic impact of over $195,000 in sales tax revenue for Jefferson Parish annually.
