Fifth man arrested in connection with Oaklawn Drive shooting

The Jefferson Parish authorities arrested a fifth man they say was involved in the Oaklawn Drive shooting in Metairie.

The man, initially known only as “Phil,” is now in police custody.

Philip Brenckle, Jr., 19 of Marrero was arrested and charged on two outstanding warrants for attempted first-degree murder and aggravated burglary.

Brenckle has prior arrests for simple burglary, resisting arrest, and numerous traffic offenses, authorities said. 

Brenckle's is the fifth suspects arrest in connection with the shooting that happened March 5 in Metairie.

According to deputies, on that night, a 29-year-old man got out of his car to visit a friend when he noticed three men walking toward the house. The victim knocked on the door to warn his friend, but the masked gunmen forced their way inside the home.

The victim tried to run away but was shot several times.

Damon Garcia, 21, was booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, and other narcotics and assault charges.

Authorities also arrested Wendell Garcia, 19, of the 2700 block of Valentine Court in New Orleans. Garcia is charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated burglary.

In a press conference announcing the arrests, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said Garcia has an extensive criminal record including 12 counts of simple burglary, 11 counts of constructive contempt, four counts of possession of stolen things, criminal trespassing, criminal damage to property, aggravated escape, attempted theft of an auto, and theft.

Damon Stephney, 39, of the 300 block of Glen Della Drive in Avondale was also arrested. Stephney was charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated burglary.

Normand said Stephney also has a criminal history that includes two counts of illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of crack cocaine, distribution of crack cocaine, assault by drive-by shooting, armed robbery, unauthorized use of a moveable, possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute schedule two narcotics, resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and violation of a protective order.

Authorities also arrested Chad Brassette, 26 of the 400 block of Oaklawn. Brassette was in the home when the victim was shot several times.

Brassette was arrested on drug possession charges.

The investigation into the shooting remains open and ongoing.
