Police: Man attacked his 86-year-old stepmother with hammer

HAMMOND, LA (WVUE) -

Hammond Police say a man is in custody accused of stealing his 86-year-old stepmother's car and attacking her with a hammer.

Police officers were called to the victim's home in the 800 block of East Merry Street on Tuesday, March 14 at about 8:30 in the morning.

Authorities say they found Emma Richburg, 86, with severe trauma to the head and facial areas.

Police say Richburg told detectives her stepson, Jerome Johnson, hit her and stole her car.

The victim was taken to North Oaks Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.

A day later, the Violent Offender Warrant Squad and the U.S. Marshals arrested Johnson in the 4000 block of Tulane Avenue in New Orleans.

The 52-year-old man is booked with attempted murder, armed robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.
