NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A bidder from Texas snapped up the 162-year-old Carrollton Courthouse at a controversial auction Thursday morning.

The building in the 700 block of South Carrollton Ave. has housed schools for more than 120 years, including Benjamin Franklin High and the Audubon School, but the school board sold it off.

The winning bid was $4.7 million from Carl Mittendorff. He owns a senior living facility in Houston and plans to open one in the historic building.

He says he has been looking to buy in the New Orleans market for several years.

There was a push by some groups, including Ben Franklin alumni and the Louisiana Landmarks Society to delay the auction and explore options to keep the building in public hands.
