NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The New Orleans Police Department is searching for a suspect in the death of a newborn baby.
According to the NOPD, police were called to a home in the 4700 block of Lafaye Street to investigate an unclassified death of a 17-day-old baby boy.
When officers arrived at the home, the suspect, 49-year-old Jeffery Edward Coleman told police that the baby fell from the sofa inside of the home.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office later classified the baby's death as a homicide. Investigators now believe that Coleman may have inflicted severe bodily harm to the child.
When Coleman is arrested, he will be charged with second degree murder.
Police are asking if anyone has any information regarding Coleman's whereabouts to contact any Child Abuse Detectives at (504) 658-5267 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
