Two charter buses carrying Baton Rouge high school students crash near LaPlace

Students injured in Laplace bus crash

LAPLACE, LA (WVUE) - Two charter buses carrying high school students from Baton Rouge crashed Friday morning on Interstate 10 Eastbound at I-55.

The charter buses, carrying students from Lee High School, were on the way to a New Orleans Pelicans game. At least 28 students are reported to be injured, according to Louisiana State Police.

All injuries are reported to be minor.

A third bus carrying students was also headed to New Orleans, but was not involved in the crash.

The crash happened at I-10 east at mile marker 209.4. The accident happened when one of the bus drivers hit the back of the charter bus in front of him. That driver will be charged with careless operation.

The students were between the ages of 16 and 17. A total of 108 students, 54 on each bus, were involved in the crash.

The injured students have been taken to St. James Hospital Lutcher, Ochsner River Parishes in LaPlace, East Jefferson in Metairie, and St. Elizabeth Gonzales.

Parents of the students have been notified.

A view from a traffic camera earlier showed two lanes blocked. Traffic was moving past the scene on the right shoulder. Drivers were also appear to be exiting I-10 at U.S. 51.
