Governor's office memo slams congressional hearing as 'witch hunt'

BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) - In an angry memo to the media, Gov. John Bel Edwards' communications director calls out Republican Congressman Garret Graves for what happened at Wednesday's House Oversight Committee hearing in Washington.

The memo from Richard Carbo says, "Yesterday, a small group of politicians in Washington, led by a member of our own delegation, conducted a distasteful ambush of Gov. Edwards using outright lies."

Carbo says the governor was led to believe the hearing was to discuss solutions to problems that have hindered the response and recovery from the 2016 floods.

Instead, the memo accuses Graves of helping orchestrate what it describes as misleading questioning by some committee members.

According to the  memo, "This isn't merely a case of Gov. Edwards vs. Rep. Graves.  This is now a case of Congressman Graves and OGR Republican Committee Members vs. reality."

The memo goes on to directly dispute a number of the claims made by Graves and other committee members about the status of the recovery.
