One man killed after hitting five-car crash in Gentilly

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - One man was killed and the passenger on a motorcycle was injured after running into the back of a five-car pileup in Gentilly.

The accident happened late Sunday night on Interstate 610 East near the intersection with Interstate 10 East near Louisa Street.

Around 11:50 p.m., police received a call reporting an accident.

When they arrived, they found a crash involving five vehicles on the flyover bridge.

Initial police reports show a disabled Nissan sedan hit the right-hand side railing on the flyover bridge had stalled in the right-hand lane.

An oncoming Infiniti sedan slowed to avoid the Nissan, followed by a Mercedes-Benz sedan.

An incoming Hummer hit the Mercedes Benz, causing a chain reaction crash with the Infiniti sedan.

A Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by a man with a female passenger then hit the Infiniti.

The male victim, believed to be the motorcycle driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger on the motorcycle was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

NOPD currently has no other reports of injuries.

Toxicology results are pending for the remaining drivers in this incident.

The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine the official cause of death and release the deceased victim's name, upon completion of an autopsy.
