LSP: Crash in Terrebonne Parish leaves two people dead

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating a crash in Terrebonne Parish that left two people dead. The incident occurred Saturday, just before 3:30 a.m. on Highway 57 near Dulac.

Police say that an SUV was traveling north on the highway and maneuvered through a right-hand curve. After the curve, for reasons unknown at this time, the vehicle ran off of the left side of the road before hitting a concrete foundation. The impact caused both the driver and the passenger in the SUV to become trapped.

According to police, both the driver and the passenger were pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators learned that the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, but the passenger was not.

Investigators have not yet released the names of the deceased as police are in the process of notifying the next of kin.

Police do not know at this time if impairment played a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained from the driver and test results are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.
