Armed men rob, shoot motorist in broken down car on I-10

ST. CHARLES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Three men were robbed, and one of them was shot, after their car broke down on Interstate 10 over the Bonnet Carre Spillway, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office.

It happened on the eastbound side of the bridge on Friday at 12:48 a.m.

The three victims were on the shoulder of the road after to their vehicle stalled. A green-colored Pontiac sedan stopped behind the vehicle and a man approached the victims, offering help.

When the victims declined, two more men got out of the Pontiac and approached the victims, investigators said.

One of the men pulled out a gun and demanded money from the victims, and a brief struggle ensued. Deputies said the armed perpetrator fired his gun into the air and again demanded money. The victims gave them money, a wallet and a cellphone.

The three attackers returned to their Pontiac and shot at the victims four more times as they drove away. One of the victims was hit twice. He was treated at an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Though the victims on the interstate had no escape, investigators recommend vigilance and calling police immediately if you have broken down to possibly prevent you from becoming a victim.

"It always comes to situational awareness. Be aware of your surroundings. Obviously, people thinking that great citizens stopping to help them and something like this occurs. It's a tragic incident but just always keep your guard up," Cpl. James Grimaldi said.
