ABITA SPRINGS, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating a two vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Covington man.
State Troopers say the crash happened just before 5 p.m. Friday on LA 435 near Lake Street in Abita Springs.
A preliminary investigation revealed that 28-year-old Dwight Donnell Johnson was riding his 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on LA 435 at a high rate of speed passing several vehicles. At that time, F-350 truck pulling a trailer carrying pine logs pulled onto the road from a private drive. Johnson's motorcycle crashed into the rear axle of the trailer and he was ejected from the bike.
Johnson suffered severe injuries in the crash. He was transported to the St. Tammany Parish Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the truck was not injured in the crash.
State Police say the crash remains under investigation. Although impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash, blood samples were taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
