An off-duty Mandeville Police Lieutenant died, Sunday, after falling from a ladder near Folsom. Lieutenant Minton "Vaughn" Whitehead, 64, was pronounced dead at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond.

According to police, Whitehead fell 20 feet from an extension ladder while trimming trees near a house, located off of Tantela Ranch Road. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Whitehead was airlifted to the hospital in Hammond where he was pronounced dead later that afternoon.

Police say that Whitehead was a 27-year veteran of the force and has held several positions including supervisor of the department's investigations division.

“Vaughn was more than an employee, he was family," said Mandeville Police Chief Gerald Sticker. "We are a relatively small, close-knit department. Vaughn was respected and well-liked by all the men and women of this department and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Vaughn’s family during this tragic time.”
