GRETNA, LA (WVUE) -

The trial of a former Destrehan High School teacher accused of having sex with students got under way with salacious and at times graphic testimony.

Lewd messages from a fake Facebook account, photos of used condoms in a parking lot and details about a failed sexual encounter were all presented in graphic detail by prosecutors.

Shelley Dufresne waived her right to a jury trial in favor of having a judge preside over the case. Dufresne pleaded not guilty to two counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile in Jefferson Parish.

She was also charged in St. Charles Parish.

A prosecutor said Dufresne had sex twice with a 16-year old boy in Jefferson Parish. The encounters happened first in a car behind a daiquiri shop and then again at a home in Kenner. Prosecutors said in opening statements that the 16-year-old was not forced into sex with Dufresne.

"He was willing and this was his fantasy, he thought it was pretty cool," said Jefferson Parish Assistant District Attorney Rachel Affrick.

Defense attorneys countered that Kenner police investigators never spoke to the student or searched for the condoms he threw out of the car window in a daiquiri shop parking lot. However, St. Charles Parish deputy Lt. Clint Patterson testified that the teen took investigators to two locations in St. Charles Parish where the sexual encounters with Dufresne occurred and found gold Trojan condoms at both.

Prosecutors have photos from the locations showing condoms and gold Trojan wrappers on the ground. The condoms were not tested, Patterson testified because Dufresne settled and entered a plea in St. Charles Parish. In that case, Dufresne pleaded guilty to felony obscenity charges. Her sentence included a deferred three-year prison term, probation, and a fine.

Kim McElwee argued that there was never a consequence for the alleged victim. McElwee said he lied to police during the investigation. When asked why he deleted evidence from his cell phone the teen responded: "I was scared, I was nervous, I didn't know what would happen."

Patterson testified that he obtained search warrants for the student’s phone and a phone belonging to Rachel Respess, the other teacher accused of having sex with a student. Patterson said the student told him there were photos of both teachers, but they were never recovered during the investigation.

The defense said the student made sexually suggestive remarks in the class of Respess, the other teacher accused of having sex with a student, and asked him about one of those encounters.

"Then I remember Dufresne and Respess were kissing, they had given each other oral sex, then I proceeded to have sex with Shelley and that was it," the teen testified.

Defense attorneys argued that the boy did not have a sexual encounter with both teachers because he was not able to get an erection.

"She offered to buy me a pill to help me get an erection while she was getting cigarettes," the teen testified, referring to Dufresne.

It was also revealed that Dufresne had created an alternate Facebook account registered to a person identified as “Madison Mexicano” and with the exclamation "I love Mexican boys." Prosecutors obtained messaging records between that account and the student involved in the encounters. A message to the student after the first encounter Kenner read, “Good morning sexy.”

Dufresne's phone was seized and a search warrant for her home was obtained. Because many of the encounters happened in Dufresne’s Honda Pilot, investigators searched the vehicle for body fluids.

A hearing in Rachel Respess' case is set for next month.
