TERRYTOWN, LA (WVUE) - Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand announced an arrest and released new details Wednesday in connection with the killing of a Terrytown mother.
On Monday, deputies discovered the woman's body at an apartment complex after a neighbor called 911 because a child was crying inside. The neighbor first knocked on the door of the home in the 2100 block of Empire Place, but no one answered. Police later found the victim, identified as Yahaira Gonzalez Rodriguez. She had been stabbed 20 times and strangled to death. Normand said she had also been sexually assaulted.
Rodriguez's 4-year-old son was not physically harmed.
The JPSO arrested Irwin Gomez Colon, 31, and booked him with second-degree murder, according to Normand. Normand said Colon was a Honduran national with a criminal history who was in the U.S. illegally.
The motive in the killing is not known.
Colon is being held on a $500,000 bond.
Normand said Rodriguez, who was from the Dominican Republic, was also in the country illegally, but that no crime victim should be afraid to call 911.
