ALGIERS, LA (WVUE) -

A Warren Easton High School student boarding a school bus was struck by a car early Thursday morning in Algiers, according to our partners at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.

The female student was hit near the intersection of General DeGaulle Drive and Westbend Parkway.

A witness, who did not want to be identified, told our partners at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune, the bus was headed north on General DeGaulle when it stopped to pick up students at Westbend.

The witness said the bus turned on its lights and opened the stop sign on the side of the bus.

As the students were getting on the bus, the witness said a light-blue Buick Century did not stop for the bus.

The driver then hit the student as she was trying to get on the bus.

The witness said he didn't see the impact but he was there in the immediate aftermath.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, according to initial New Orleans Police Department reports.

The juvenile suffered what are believed to be minor/non-life-threatening injuries, according to the NOPD.

The driver of the vehicle was cited for failure to yield and improper passing of a school bus, police said.
