NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

New Orleans firefighters rescued a naked man after he climbed a 14-story power transmission tower in New Orleans East.

The man climbed up the tower in a gated field between the 4500 block of Downman and Jourdan roads around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Crews appeared to negotiate with the man over the next six hours. A ladder truck eventually moved in and at least four rescue workers harnessed the man to lower him to the ground.

He was taken away on a stretcher from the scene at 4 p.m.

Capt. Edwin Holmes said five units involving 21 New Orleans Fire Department personnel are at the scene.

It is unclear why the man climbed to the top of the tower.
