Causeway officers honored for saving truck driver after crash

Causeway police honored for rescue

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - Causeway officials honored two quick-thinking officers who rescued a driver's life last month.

They were called into action after an 18 wheeler broke down and then was rear-ended by a pick-up truck on the southbound span March 8.

Officers Colt Bruhl and Donald Cerise responded quickly and used their fire extinguishers to put out a fire that threatened the life of the pick-up truck driver.

"I had to break the window to let the smoke out, and the driver was injured severely,' said Cerise.

"You can never plan for anything out here," said Bruhl. "It's crazy - one minute, traffic stop, the next, saving someone's life."

The driver of the pick-up truck, Joseph Tuminar, sustained moderate to severe fracture injuries, but due to the quick action of the officers, his burns were kept to a minimum.

The Causeway officers were assisted by firefighters with St Tammany Fire District 4.

This is the second time officer Bruhl has been commended for saving someone's life. He rescued another man in an overboard accident four years ago.
