HATTIESBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Andy Cannizaro's first season at Mississippi State has been defined by comebacks. The Bulldogs completed the biggest comeback of them all early Tuesday morning.

Brent Rooker's bloop 2-run single in the 8th gave MSU a 8-6 victory over Southern Miss in the Hattiesburg Regional Final. The Bulldogs won four straight elimination games to advance to Super Regionals. It's the 2nd straight season for State in Supers.

The 8th inning highlighted a wild Monday in Hattiesburg. Rooker's bloop single landed between 3 Golden Eagle fielders. USM had a chance to tie in the bottom of the 8th. Daniel Keating was called out on a very close play at first. Had Keating been called safe, the tying run would have scored. Head coach Scott Berry was ejected after arguing with the first base umpire.

Riley Self shut the door in the 9th to clinch a regional title.

MSU will face SEC West rival LSU this coming weekend in a best 2 out of 3 series in Baton Rouge. The winner heads to Omaha for the College World Series.

USM finishes the 2017 season 50-16. The Golden Eagles set a program record for most wins in a season.

For way too long, the saints usually couldn't win without a stellar performance from Drew Brees in a “score fest. But yesterday they did, and recently they have, because in the midst of this four-game winning streak that has them surprisingly atop the NFC South, he hasn't had to.
