My AP poll: Alabama stays at No. 1, LSU moves up to No. 8

(WVUE) - Some of my AP voting brethren tried to be cute, witty, or adventurous not picking Alabama No. 1 in their preseason poll. I went with the Tide, and was so right. They beat up on Florida State 24-7 in Atlanta. Alabama dominated on special teams, and wore down the 'Noles after a tight first half. I honestly don't see a loss anytime soon on the schedule for the Tide. November could get tricky with LSU coming to town, or a road game at Auburn.

Speaking of LSU, I moved the Tigers up five spots in my poll to No. 8. The Bengal Tigers suspended 13 players for their contest with BYU, and still shut them out 27-0. LSU only used 10 percent of their call sheet on offense, and still Danny Etling looked sharp going 14-of-17 passing for 173 yards. OC Matt Canada won't show all of his cards until Florida in early October.

My big riser of the week, UCLA. You score 35 unanswered points in a win, you're going to get my attention. They enter my rankings at No. 20.

A squad that needs to prove they're worth the hype, USC. They looked lackluster in a 49-31 victory over Western Michigan. Heisman hopeful Sam Darnold threw two interceptions, with no touchdowns. They dropped to No. 9 in my poll.
