Covington man guilty of sexually abusing children

COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - A St. Tammany Parish jury returned a guilty plea in the case of a Covington man accused of sexually abusing children.  District Attorney Warren Montgomery reports that 66-year old Charles L. Pineda, 66 was convicted of two counts of sexual battery of a child under 13. Pineda is scheduled for sentencing on Dec. 12 before District Judge Raymond Childress.

Following the jury's guilty verdict on Friday, October 27, Judge Childress set a $20,000 sentencing bond, over the objection of Assistant District Attorneys Blake Peters and Holly McGinness, who prosecuted the case.

Pineda, who was a friend of the victim's family, was charged with sexually abusing one of the victims from the time she was about 8 years old until she turned 12 years old, from 2008 through 2012. The second victim was 5 years old when she was sexually abused by Pineda on or about Oct. 12, 2014.

Pineda faces 25 years to 99 years in prison, with at least the first 25 years being without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.
