Kenner mayor gets rid of fire chief after internal investigation

KENNER, LA (WVUE) - Kenner Fire Chief John Hellmers was relieved of duty Monday following an internal investigation, according to Mayor Ben Zahn's office.

He had been on administrative leave since the beginning of September.

Interim Fire Chief Ryan Bergeron will remain in charge of the department.

Hellmers has the right to appeal his dismissal to the Kenner Fire Civil Service Board, according to Kenner Chief Administrative Officer Deborah Foshee.

"The Zahn Administration will make no further comments regarding this personnel matter until all appeal delays are exhausted," Foshee said in an email.

It is unclear what sparked the investigation.
