Brand new car stolen, totaled in police chase

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A police chase ended in a crash in a Gentilly neighborhood Wednesday. 

The car, which was stolen from a store on Chef Highway, crashed through a power pole and into a yard in the 5600 block of St. Bernard Avenue.

The owner of the stolen car reported it missing a few days ago, but also attempted to contact the people who stole it to give them a chance to return it. no questions asked. 

The owner of the stolen vehicle had only had the car for a few weeks. 

Three suspects are in custody and were charged in connection with the crash. 

The driver, Domonique Mercadel,19, and the passenger Lashunta Hamilton, 20, were taken into custody at the scene.

Mercadel was charged with reckless operation, resisting arrest by flight, criminal damage to property, auto theft, possession of stolen things, and 13 other traffic citations.

Hamilton was charged with possession of stolen things and resisting arrest by flight.
