JPSO: Suspect shot, injured after pointing gun at deputies

JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Deputies are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Harvey that left the suspect injured.

According to police, two deputies responded to the call of a complaint, Saturday at 9:15 p.m., in the 1100 block of Tallow Tree Lane.

The detectives noticed a black man, later identified as 20-year-old Demone Carto of Harvey, participating in a drug transaction.

They approached Carto and identified themselves as police. Carto then dropped a small amount of marijuana before pulling out a pistol and pointing it at the detectives.

One of the detectives fire three shots at Carto hitting him once in the back. Carto's injuries are reportedly non-life threatening.

He was transported to University Hospital where he had surgery and is listed in stable condition.

Police say that based on witness statements and evidence, the deputies' force was considered reasonable and necessary.

Once released from the hospital, Carto will be charged with various crimes.
