NOPD gets an assist from good Samaritans

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Alert bystanders helped members of the NOPD Special Operations Unit catch a man suspected in a robbery and attempted carjacking in a parking lot on Read Boulevard.

Investigators say Jason Batiste followed a woman to her vehicle, pushed her into her seat and tried to get her car keys.

They say the attack caught the attention of two people nearby, so Batiste grabbed the victim's purse and made a run for it.

Police say the bystanders chased him to another parking lot a block away where they were able to flag down the special operations officers.

The officers took Batiste into custody and booked him with robbery, simple burglary and attempted carjacking.
