COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - For the first time in 29 years, Covington finished the regular season undefeated. Lions Head Coach Greg Salter was a ballboy on that '88 squad, and can no doubt feel the buzz is back at the "Cow Palace."
"The community is excited. In fact, the other night someone took a picture and brought it in to me at 6 o'clock before the gates had opened. There was a line from the ticket booth all the way to the street. That's the kind of stuff I remember as a kid when I was a ballboy back in the 80's. Those are the memories I had, and I hoped that would come back," said Salter. "Starting with our 2013 team that went to the semi-finals, really laid the foundation for all of this. I give them all the credit in the world, those seniors of 2013. It's been a fun season. Some people use the word magical, it certainly holds true. It's been a great experience, and one I certainly don't want to end."
Yes, this is one of the best teams in Covington school history, and they're a No. 2 seed. But don't you dare mention the Dome.
"No, in fact I made sure the other night after we finished 10-0 after the Mandeville game. I told them point-blank I do not want to hear the "D" word. Because that word is traveling around the town. It's great, everyone is excited. Certainly a site all of us want to end up at. But it is so far away. It's a long and grueling road, starting with Thibodaux this week. It's going to be a tall task to get there," said Salter.
