NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A two-alarm fire Monday in the Seventh Ward destroyed a house that had been unoccupied since Hurricane Katrina and severely damaged a home next door.
The fire broke out in the 1600 block of N. Claiborne just before 4 p.m. It took firefighters less than an hour to get it under control.
The owner of the home where the fire started did not live there. She said a neighbor ran over and told her about it.
"All I did was run out of the house with no shoes and left her. And I just ran there and everything was up in a blaze," said homeowner Josephine
James said the house had no electricity or running water, and she was working on getting it restored.
Fire officials say a couple lived in the other duplex that was damaged. They were not home at the time.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
