NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

A doctor thinks the man who ate his own feces in court is competent to stand trial in connection with the death of a NOPD officer.

The doctor evaluated Travis Boys after the defendant's incident inside Judge Herman's courtroom. In a letter sent to Herman November 14, the doctor says he believes Boys "has the mental capacity to proceed as he now understands the proceedings against him."

Judge Herman said she declared Boys incompetent, out of an abundance of caution, following October's incident inside her courtroom. A new court hearing will determine what happens next in the case.

Boys is accused of the 2015 killing NOPD officer Darryl Holloway. His defense argues he's not guilty by reason of insanity.
