Zurik: FOX 8 subpoenaed, will provide State of Unrest video

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

The East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney's Office and State Police have sent FOX 8 News a subpoena, requesting video and records related to our State of Unrest investigation.

Our investigation found four state troopers potentially committing payroll fraud, earning overtime from what's called the LACE detail program while our undercover surveillance found them at home. The subpoena asks us to turn over all the surveillance video. We're required to hand over this information next month.

It's extensive - hundreds of hours. Investigators also want copies of interviews, names and contact information for the people who conducted surveillance, and logs supporting the footage obtained by surveillance.

Our most extensive findings involved Trooper Daryl Thomas, the highest-paid law enforcer in Louisiana. We had an undercover camera at Thomas's house on 12 different work days over the past few months. What we found: For all 12 days, Thomas claimed hours on his timesheet that he did not work.

Days before our first story aired, the State Police superintendent, Col. Kevin Reeves, told us he would launch a criminal investigation.

The subpoena indicates that joint probe by LSP and the EBR district attorney may be picking up pace, as investigators determine whether they can prove a payroll fraud case against the four state troopers.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
