NOPD and state police tout successful security over holiday weekend

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

The New Orleans Police Department and the Louisiana State Police said stepped up patrols over the holiday weekend, saying it led to multiple gun arrests, getting potential shooters off the street and confiscated illegal weapons.

The department said it made 19 gun arrests in two days, including the arrest of a man carrying an assault rifle near Canal and Bourbon streets.

“This was truly a team effort as these arrests were made by officers of not only the Eighth District and the Louisiana State Police but Third District, Fourth District, Fifth District, Gang Task Force, and Mounted units,” said Eighth District Commander Nicholas Gernon. “Eighteen gun arrests in two days, 15 of them being Saturday alone, the officers did a great job this weekend.”

A rundown of this weekend’s gun arrests are as follows: 

Friday, November 24, 2017 

  • 300 block of Bourbon Street. Toddrick Decker, of Baton Rouge. Illegal carrying of a weapon
  • 700 block of Canal Street. Germaine Phillips, 21, of Baton Rouge. Possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, Illegal carrying of a firearm, resisting an officer, possession of Schedule I narcotics 
  • 700 block of Bourbon Street. Alexander Russell, 33, of Houston Texas. Possession of a firearm in an ABO, illegal carrying of weapons, resident of Houston, Texas
  • James Tymon, 18, Lawrenceville, Ga. Illegal possession of a weapon. 

Saturday, November 25, 2017 

  • 700 block of Bourbon Street. Matthew Stewart, 21, of New Orleans. Felon with a firearm, possession of a firearm in an ABO 
  • 100 block of Bourbon Street. Peter Guy, 21, of Covington. Felon with a firearm, possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance 
  • 800 block of Canal Street. Darrius Taylor, 31, Harvey. Felon with a firearm, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, illegal carrying of a weapon 
  • 300 block of Bourbon Street. Raphael Baranco, 19, Lafayette. Illegal carrying of a weapon, resisting arrest 
  • 700 block of Canal Street. Joseph Graham, 18, Baton Rouge. Illegal carrying of weapons, possession of a Schedule I narcotic. (Graham was apprehended while hiding an assault rifle in his pants.)
  • 700 block of Canal Street.  16-year-old juvenile, Zachary. Illegal carrying of a weapon while in possession of narcotics, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, possession of  Schedule IV narcotic 
  • 100 block of Royal Street. David Williams, 31, Carencro. Illegal carrying of a weapon 
  • 100 block of Royal Street. Tyrrance Antoine, 19, New Iberia. Felon with a firearm, illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of Schedule I narcotic 
  • 700 block of Bourbon Street. Dwayne Butler, 23, Harvey. Possession of a firearm in an ABO 
  • 700 block of Canal Street. Donovan James, 28, Plaquemine. Illegal carrying of weapons, possession of a Schedule I narcotic 
  • 800 block of Iberville Street. Ometric Magee, 24, Baton Rouge.  Possession of a stolen firearm, illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of a Schedule I narcotic 
  • 700 block of Bourbon Street. Tyshawn Holmes, New Orleans. Illegal carrying of weapon, possession of firearm in an ABO 
  • 500 block of Bourbon Street. Tyquan Nicholson, Independence. Illegal possession of a stolen firearm, illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of a weapon while in possession of a Schedule I narcotic 
  • 300 block of Bourbon Street. Isadore Fields, 27, Denham Springs. Illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of a CDS Schedule I 
  • 700 block of Bourbon Street. Christopher Polkey, 22, Westwego. Possession of a firearm in an ABO.

The Louisiana State Police issued a total of 220 citations, responded to 108 calls for service and participated in 298 agency assists with the NOPD.

We don't get much of a break during the overnights with lows only dipping to around 80. The high pressure starts breaking down on Monday and push back to the west.
