Slidell man killed after vehicle strikes boat trailer in St. James

ST. JAMES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating an accident in St. James, involving a boat trailer, that claimed the life of a Slidell man. The accident occurred Monday, just before 1 p.m. on Highway 18 near the intersection of Pecan Street. The victim has been identified as 49-year-old David Burvant.

According to police, 20-year-old Jeremiah Allee of St. Amant was driving a pickup truck north on Hwy 18 while towing a boat on a trailer. Burvant was traveling south on the same stretch of road. As the two vehicles approached one another, the trailer became detached from Allee's pickup, for unknown reasons. The boat trailer struck Burvant's vehicle in the passenger compartment.

Police say that Burvant was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, but sustained critical injuries. He was brought to a nearby hospital, but was later pronounced dead. Allee, who was also wearing his seat belt, was not injured in the crash.

Investigators do not believe that impairment played a role in the crash. Standard toxicology test results for Burvant are pending. Troopers administered a breath test to Allee and the test did not detect any alcohol.
