UPDATE: JPSO arrests hit-and-run suspect who sent woman's car into a Metairie canal

Woman goes into canal after hit and run

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - The hit-and-run suspect who rear-ended a woman in Metairie on Wednesday, sending her car into a canal, has been arrested.

Metairie resident Alvin D. Haley, 21, is booked with failure to yield, driving without a license and leaving the scene of a crash.

The woman, who officers said is in her 70s, was driving on West Esplanade near the corner of Chateau when she was hit. The other driver, identified as Haley, sped off in an unknown direction.

The woman was safely extricated from her car and taken to University Medical Center. The extent of her injuries is not known.

Deputies said they tracked Haley down using his license plate number. They said Haley confessed to the crash, telling deputies he fled because he didn't have a driver's license.

Witnesses say there are often crashes in the area due to the U-turn near Chateau.
