NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Construction work that kept a busy intersection closed for months is scheduled to be completed later this month, but the intersection should be open Monday around 3 p.m., according to the RTA.
Officials say the inconvenience to drivers and businesses will be worth it once they see the results.
The Canal Street City Park Avenue intersection has been closed since the end of July.
RTA officials made the decision to close the entire intersection to save money and expedite the construction time to four months.
Leaving another lane open would have extended the project into the year 2019, which would have also been a more expensive option, according to RTA officials.
The Canal Streetcar line has been extended by one half block to the north side of City Park Avenue.
A new bus terminal has been built to help with congestion from the four bus lines that come through the area.
The idea behind the Cemeteries Transit Center project is to make the busy area safer for everyone.
RTA has been testing the new streetcar line by using a truck to pull a streetcar along the fresh track.
It took 20 years to get the $10 million dollar going, and RTA officials said despite some unanticipated problems, the entire project has come in under budget.
