(WVUE) -

Paul Fleming, 44, is booked with two counts of negligent homicide and one count of feticide.

A couple, along with their unborn child, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police say witnesses told them that Saturday around 9 a.m., Fleming was traveling at a high rate of speed when he got onto the Highway 11 Bridge from Irish Bayou. They say Fleming was driving eastbound in the westbound lane when he crashed head-on into the couple’s vehicle.

Son Huan, Sophia Nguyen and their unborn child were all killed. According to court records, Fleming was interviewed after the crash and was unable to recall what happened. Investigators say he had trouble answering simple questions and appeared to be unsteady on his feet. He was given a breathalyzer, but the results were negative. Police are now waiting on the results of toxicology reports.

“Every death is horrible whether it’s one person, or in this case, three people. It just makes it so much worse with three people involved. I’d like to remind drivers to just pay attention and drive carefully, but always drive defensively because the roadway at any time can change,” says NOPD Lt. Avery Theard.

Fleming’s bond has been set at $90,000. Court records show he’s from Alabama.
