The New Orleans Police Department arrested a 31-year-old man Tuesday morning in New Orleans East after he barricaded himself inside an apartment when officers observed signs of domestic violence.

A spokesman for the NOPD says that while responding to a separate call around 8:20 a.m. in the 6700 block of Bundy Road, officers heard a woman and children screaming inside an apartment at the location.

An officer peered in a window and saw children in the apartment. When the officers knocked on the door and identified themselves, the lights inside the apartment went dark and individuals inside went silent.

Responding officers requested assistance from a unit from the Special Operations Division and a SWAT team was deployed to the scene.

When the SWAT team arrived at the scene, a woman and four children were in the apartment.

The subject surrendered peacefully when he observed SWAT team members at the scene.
