Good Samaritan presumed dead after trying to rescue occupants of submerged car

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - One person is deceased and another is presumed dead after a car plunged into the West End canal along Lakeshore Drive Tuesday.

The deceased was an occupant of the car. Presumed dead is a Good Samaritan, identified by a family member as Frankie Williams, who participated in the rescue. A third person survived and is hospitalized.

The incident began at about 7 p.m. when a car with a driver and a passenger, for unknown reasons, went into the water near the Blue Crab restaurant in the 7900 block of Lakeshore Drive. Police said a group of people, including workers at the Blue Crab, went into the water to try to rescue them. The driver and passenger were pulled from the water and taken to the hospital, where one of them later died.

One of the restaurant workers involved in the rescue attempt never surfaced. The search for that person has been suspended for the night and will resume Wednesday morning, weather permitting.
