NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The New Orleans Fire Department says an elderly man was injured during a house fire in Gentilly Sunday morning.

Firefighters say the fire started just after 10 a.m. in the 5500 block of Cameron Boulevard.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found a one-story home with flames coming from the front of the home.

Rescue units who entered through the back of the home found an elderly man lying on the floor unresponsive due to smoke inhalation. The man was treated with oxygen until EMS arrived. He was later transported to University Medical Center.

Neighbors told firefighters that they attempted to enter the home before firefighters arrived but were unable to due to the intensity of the heat and smoke.

Officials say one firefighter was treated by EMS on scene after complaining of blurred vision and weakness but remained on duty.
