NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A New Orleans East family heard gunshots Thursday night right before a truck plowed through their home in the 7000 block of Salem Drive. The driver of the truck was pronounced dead on the scene.
Ashley Robinson said his 17-year-old stepson didn't have time to react.
"He was sitting in the bed like he normally do, and then he heard a pop, pop, pop and then boom!" he said.
Police say the driver of the truck was shot and then lost control, crossing an empty field before hitting a metal fence and then the side of Robinson's home.
"He took out the wall and the bathroom along with the shower and the toilet," Robinson said.
The family was initially afraid to approach the vehicle.
"They didn't know he was dead," Robinson said. "They thought he was drunk. His body was slumped over, and they didn't get close to him."
Responding officers confirmed that the driver was shot and died on the scene, which, for Robinson, was more upsetting than the home damage.
"We're more concerned about him dying than what happened to the house, so that's another life been taken. Lord Jesus," Robinson said.
The family had just moved into the house last fall, and they hadn't yet purchased any type of insurance. They don't know how they'll pay for repairs, and they're now staying in a hotel thanks to the Red Cross.
